The Hummus Shop, Charles Street, Beacon Hill

Tucked into a rear unit behind a boutique on Charles Street, The Hummus Shop is easy to walk past — and that would be a mistake. This little Beacon Hill spot has become one of my go-to lunch stops, and it's exactly the kind of "hidden gem" energy I love finding in a neighborhood as historic as this one.

What we ordered:

  • Falafel Hummus Bowl — creamy hummus, crispy falafel, Israeli salad, and their house-made spicy schug sauce, all in one bowl.

  • Hash browns — house-made crispy hash browns that are the perfect crunchy side or snack. My kids devoured these!

  • Pita — soft, warm, and the ideal vehicle for scooping up hummus and tahini.

  • Sabich in a pita — my husband ordered this one and called it “one of the best sandwiches he’s ever had”. Filled with crispy fried eggplant, sliced hard-boiled egg, tahini, a finely chopped cucumber-tomato Israeli salad, and both spicy schug and garlicky toum sauce.

What makes it special: Everything here is made from scratch — the hummus, tahini, falafel, and sauces are all made in small batches, and they prioritize ingredients from local small businesses wherever possible. It's also one of the few certified Kosher spots in Boston, and the hummus itself is light and zippy with lemon — the kind of hummus that makes you understand why people build a whole menu around it.

One of my favorite little details: the walls are decorated with coloring pages filled in by visitors, which gives the whole space this homemade, community feel — like you're stepping into a neighborhood spot that people genuinely love, not just a quick lunch stop. It's a small touch, but it adds so much charm.

It's a small space with big flavor, the kind of place that rewards you for wandering around Charles Street. If you're in Beacon Hill and craving something fresh, grab a bowl or a pita and eat it in the Public Garden — that's the move.
